Nurses Exhibit Their Skills
Nurses are now heading east to the University of Kansas medical Center from Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses to have their share of the cutting edge knowledge being provided. From the Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, nurses are now heading towards to the University of Kansas Medical Center known for its cutting edge of nursing. The medical center has initiated a program, which will enable the nurses of rural hospitals to work at Kansas City hospitals for short durations. This program has a twofold benefit which allows the nurses to work with numerous cases they have seldom come across at the medical centre which benefits in turn as it is short of nurses.

But so far the only hospital included in this program is the 35 bed Ulysses hospital. 12 of the 26 nurses working there have thought to give it a try. Many nurses, who have already been to the medical center work for 3-4 days in eight to twelve hour shifts.

A nurse, who’s been working in Ulysses for the past 5 years, was quite thrilled with the program. In Kansas City, she usually handled patients with cases of bone marrow, liver and kidney as part of the hematology unit assigned to her. The medical center’s outreach plane during its scheduled stops to western Kansas transports the nurses to Kansas City where they are housed at the medical center.

According to the administrator of the Ulysses hospital, the program has much potential for nursing staff in the surrounding areas. It’s the opportunity to experience nursing practice at a tertiary care level and work with state-of-the-art equipment.

He said that their entire nursing staff will have access to that knowledge through nurses who participate, and will be more in tuned with state of the art care which improves patient care. That’s a tremendous advantage. The director, nursing services also said that the program has a twofold purpose. It helps capable nurses in getting better experience and thus better jobs; and simultaneously takes care of the staff shortage at the center.

The nurses have well adapted to the medical center. She said that they provide some instruction, but they are good practitioners and good workers. The staff is also glad to work with such people. It’s the 7 passenger outreach planes, which takes the doctors for educational seminars, which have made this program possible.

To find part time work, the nurses usually drive into the Kansas City from Manhattan, Topeka, Paola and Fort Scott. At a time 2-3 nurses can catch a ride on the plane. A nurse who has been with Ulysses for the past three years says that the event needs a lot of planning in the future.

She had to put in much thought and planning into it; but is once again ready for it. The nurse pointed out that she has a lot of support from her daughters 8 and 14 years old respectively who want her to have the opportunity to enhance her skills. She hopes that they will soon reap the benefits of that education which they might be able to use back home efficiently.
